WhatsApp against Telegram, honestly

This comparison is usually argued as though one app is private and the other is not, which misses what each is actually built for. WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted by default and stores a great deal of metadata. Telegram is a more capable messaging platform whose ordinary chats its servers can read. Both facts are true and they matter in different situations.

The two, and the third option

1

WhatsApp

WhatsApp LLC
4,6 10 bi+ 147 MB

End-to-end by default and installed by nearly everyone, which is itself a privacy feature since the alternative is often unencrypted SMS. Check whether your cloud backup is encrypted, because by default it is not.

2

Telegram

Telegram FZ-LLC
3,8 1 bi+ 106 MB

The better messaging product: faster, better clients, enormous groups, generous file limits and excellent behaviour on weak connections. Treat ordinary chats as visible to the service.

3

Signal

Signal Foundation
4,5 100 mi+ 168 MB

Signal, the third option that resolves the argument: end-to-end by default like WhatsApp, minimal metadata unlike either, at the cost of a smaller network.

4

SimpleX Chat

SimpleX Chat
4,3 1 mi+ 134 MB

SimpleX. No user identifiers at all, not even a random one. The strictest option on this page.

5

Element Classic

Element Creations Limited
3,3 1 mi+ 68 MB

Element. Matrix chat with end to end encryption and servers anyone can run.

6

Wire • Secure Messenger

Wire Swiss GmbH
3,5 5 mi+ 107 MB

Wire. End to end encrypted by default, with a strong business offering.

7

Viber

Viber Media
4,1 1 bi+ 240 MB

Viber. Encrypted by default, and the dominant messenger in several countries.

8

LINE

LINE (LY Corporation)
3,1 1 bi+ 328 MB

LINE. Dominant in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, with its Letter Sealing encryption on by default.

9

Messenger

Meta Platforms, Inc.
4,7 5 bi+ 86 MB

Messenger. Now end to end encrypted for personal chats, from the same company as WhatsApp.

10

Discord

Discord Inc.
4,3 500 mi+ 403 MB

Discord. Not private messaging, but where many group chats have moved. No end to end encryption.

Which to use when

WhatsApp fits
  • Talking to people who already use it
  • Personal conversations you want encrypted with no setup
  • Voice and video calls
  • Small groups of family and friends
Telegram fits
  • Large communities and channels
  • Sharing large files
  • Reading the same chats across several devices
  • Poor connections and older phones
  • Public discussion rather than private conversation

The honest summary: use Telegram for anything public or communal, use WhatsApp for private conversation with people who have it, and use Signal for the conversations that genuinely need protecting.

The setting both get wrong by default

  1. Check whether your backup is encrypted WhatsApp offers an end-to-end encrypted backup that is off unless you turn it on and set a password.
  2. Remember the other person's backup counts A conversation is only as protected as the least careful participant's settings.
  3. Turn off automatic media saving Received images copied to the gallery get swept into photo backup as well.
  4. Use disappearing messages where it matters The only reliable limit on how long a conversation exists anywhere.

Telegram for communities and files, WhatsApp for private conversation with people who have it, Signal for what genuinely matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is Telegram less secure than WhatsApp?

For default one-to-one chats, yes, because WhatsApp is end-to-end by default and Telegram is not. For everything else the comparison is more even.

Can I use both?

Yes, and most people effectively do, because the two networks overlap only partly.

Which uses less data?

Telegram, generally, and it is noticeably better behaved on a weak connection.
