Video players that open the files your gallery refuses

Android's built-in video playback uses hardware decoders, which cover a narrow set of formats very efficiently. Anything outside that set produces no video, no audio, or a file that simply will not open. A proper player carries its own software decoders and switches to them when the hardware cannot help.

What breaks, and why

SymptomCause

The players worth having

1

VLC

Videolabs
4,0 500 mi+ 46 MB

Plays essentially everything, handles subtitles well, streams from network shares, and has no advertising or account. If you install one player, install this.

2

MX Player

Amazon Mobile LLC
4,2 1 bi+ 105 MB

The best gesture controls of any Android player, strong subtitle handling, and codec support that covers the awkward cases. Ad-supported, with a paid version.

3

Just (Video) Player

Marcel Dopita
4,1 1 mi+ 18 MB

A clean player built on the same engine as many others, with excellent subtitle and audio track switching. No ads, no account, very small.

4

KMPlayer

PANDORA.TV
4,1 10 mi+ 196 MB

Broad format support and a good equaliser, useful for badly mastered audio tracks.

5

DicePlayer

INISOFT_DEV
3,0 100 mil+ 13 MB

DicePlayer. Notable for smooth hardware-accelerated playback of high-bitrate files where other players fall back to software.

6

Web Video Cast

InstantBits Inc
4,6 50 mi+ 83 MB

Less a player than a bridge: it sends local and web video to a TV or media device, which is often what you actually wanted.

7

mpv-android

Prismriver Media
4,2 500 mil+ 32 MB

mpv. The same engine as the desktop player, with excellent format support and precise controls.

8

Archos Video Player Free

Archos S.A.
2,8 10 mi+ 20 MB

Archos Video Player. Strong network share support and automatic subtitle fetching.

9

BSPlayer

ITSOL Media
3,5 10 mi+ 21 MB

BSPlayer. Long-standing, with good hardware decoding and subtitle handling.

10

PLAYit

PLAYIT TECHNOLOGY PTE. LTD.
4,5 500 mi+ 27 MB

PLAYit. Very popular for local files; noticeably heavier on advertising.

11

XPlayer

InShot Inc.
4,8 100 mi+ 67 MB

A simple all-format player for people who want files to just open.

12

Jellyfin

Jellyfin
4,4 1 mi+ 13 MB

For files on your own server: it transcodes what the phone cannot decode.

13

Plex TV

Plex, Inc.
3,5 100 mi+ 269 MB

The alternative server client, with the same transcoding advantage.

Making subtitles behave

  1. Name the subtitle file to match the video Same name, .srt extension, same folder. Every player picks it up automatically after that.
  2. Set the encoding if the characters are wrong Older subtitle files are not UTF-8. The player has an encoding setting, and this is what it is for.
  3. Adjust the delay rather than re-downloading Both VLC and MX Player let you shift subtitle timing while playing, in small increments.
  4. Prefer SRT over ASS for phones Styled subtitles are heavier to render and often too small on a phone screen.

Hardware versus software decoding

Hardware decoding
  • Much lower battery use
  • Smooth playback of high bitrates
  • Cooler phone on long files
Software decoding
  • Plays formats the chip does not support
  • Correct colours on unusual encodings
  • The only option for some audio tracks

Both VLC and MX Player let you choose per file. The sensible default is hardware first with automatic fallback, and switching manually only when something looks wrong. If a film stutters, try software. If the battery vanishes, go back to hardware.

Install VLC. Add MX Player if you want better gestures. Name subtitle files to match the video and most problems disappear.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my MKV have no sound?

The audio track is probably AC3 or DTS. VLC and MX Player both decode these in software.

Which player uses the least battery?

Whichever one keeps hardware decoding active. The player matters less than whether the file can be decoded by the chip.

Can these play files from my computer?

Yes. VLC and MX Player both browse network shares directly, which avoids copying large files to the phone at all.
