Updating apps the Play Store does not manage

The Play Store checks for updates because it knows where the app came from. An app installed from a file has no such link, so it stays at the version you installed until you do something. For a browser or a messenger that matters, because updates carry security fixes.

The three approaches

ApproachEffortGood for
The app's own updaterNone, if it has oneApps that check themselves
A store client that tracks your appsOne-off setupOpen source apps
A monthly manual checkFifteen minutes a monthA handful of apps

Why updating is straightforward

An update signed with the same key installs straight over the existing app, keeping every setting and all local data. Nothing is uninstalled, nothing is lost, and Android performs a genuine cryptographic check as part of it.

  1. Download the new version From the same source as the one you installed.
  2. Install it without uninstalling anything It replaces the existing app in place.
  3. If Android refuses, stop A refusal means a different signing key. Work out why before going further.
  4. Check the app still works before deleting the old file Particularly for anything you depend on.

Which apps actually need it

Update promptly
  • Browsers, every time
  • Messaging apps
  • Password managers and authenticators
  • Anything that opens files from other people
Once in a while is fine
  • Offline utilities
  • Media players you point at your own files
  • Games with local progress
  • Tools with no network permission

The left-hand column is short and it is the one that matters. A sideloaded browser that is a year behind is a genuine problem; a sideloaded calculator is not.

A habit that works

Keep a short list of the apps you installed by hand, in a note. Once a month, open it and check the three or four that matter. That is the whole system, and it takes less time than reading this paragraph implies.

The list has a second use: it is what you consult after moving to a new phone, since sideloaded apps are exactly what the system transfer does not bring across.

Check whether the app updates itself, keep a list of the rest, and prioritise browsers and messengers.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Play Store update a sideloaded app?

Sometimes, if the same app is on the store and the signature matches. Play-signed builds usually do not match, so generally no.

Will I lose data when I update by hand?

No, provided you install over the top rather than uninstalling first.

Is an out-of-date app dangerous?

It depends on what it touches. A browser, yes. An offline tool, barely.
