Maps that are already on the phone

Offline maps solve three problems at once: roaming charges, dead zones and battery life. A phone that is not fetching map tiles while navigating uses dramatically less power, which is the difference between arriving with a usable phone and arriving without one.

The three kinds of offline map

Commercial offline navigationPolished turn by turn with voiceDriving abroad

The apps

1

OsmAnd

OsmAnd
4,5 10 mi+ 180 MB

The most detailed offline map there is, built on open data, with contour lines, footpaths and routing profiles for walking and cycling. Dense interface, unmatched substance.

2

OsmAnd+ — Maps & GPS Offline

OsmAnd
4,7 100 mil+ 196 MB

The paid build of the same, with unlimited downloads. Worth it the moment you use it for a second country.

3

MAPS.ME: Nav GPS mapas offline

Maps_Me
4,1 50 mi+ 432 MB

Far friendlier than the previous one, same open data underneath, and fast search on a downloaded map. The best first choice for most people.

4

HERE WeGo

HERE Europe B.V.
3,2 10 mi+ 76 MB

Proper offline turn by turn with lane guidance, downloaded per country. The strongest free option for driving abroad.

5

Sygic Navegação por GPS, Mapas

Sygic.
4,1 50 mi+ 400 MB

Commercial navigation with the best offline voice guidance of the set. Paid features, but the core navigation works offline.

6

Google Maps

Google LLC
3,2 10 bi+ 290 MB

Download the area before you fly. Routing and search still work in the cached region, though transit and traffic do not.

7

Waze

Waze
4,3 500 mi+ 287 MB

Online only and worth saying so plainly. Excellent in traffic, useless in a valley.

8

Trail Sense

Trail Sense
4,7 100 mil+ 12 MB

Compass, altitude, sun and moon times, and a backtrack trail, using only the phone sensors. The companion to an offline map when there is no road at all.

9

Wikipédia

Wikimedia Foundation
4,3 50 mi+ 84 MB

Download the place articles for the region. Offline context about what you are looking at, with no connection.

10

Tripadvisor: planeje viagens

Tripadvisor
4,5 100 mi+ 73 MB

Save the places you care about before you travel. The saved list is available offline even though the app is not really designed for it.

11

Booking.com

Booking.com Hotels & Vacation Rentals
4,8 500 mi+ 265 MB

Keep the confirmation and the address available offline. Arriving at an airport with no signal and no address is a specific and avoidable misery.

12

Agoda

agoda.com
4,6 100 mi+ 186 MB

The same reasoning in the regions where it is the stronger service.

13

Google Trips - Travel Planner

Google LLC
4,2 10 mi+ 8 MB

Trip organisation with offline access to the plan, which is more useful than the maps in it.

14

Uber

Uber Technologies, Inc.
4,7 1 bi+ 285 MB

Online only, but worth having the app installed and signed in before you land rather than at the taxi rank.

15

Grab

Grab Holdings
4,8 100 mi+ 333 MB

The same advice for South East Asia, where it is the one that works.

The twenty minutes before you leave

  1. Download the whole country, not the city Vector maps are small. The road that leaves the city is the one you will need.
  2. Download the routing data as well as the map Several apps separate them, and a map with no routing data shows where you are and will not tell you how to leave.
  3. Save your accommodation as a favourite Searching for an address offline is less reliable than a pin you placed while you had a connection.
  4. Test one route in aeroplane mode Two minutes, at home. It is the only way to know the download actually completed.
  5. Download an offline translation model too The same principle and the same failure mode, and it lives in a different app.

Download the country, download the routing data, save the address, then test one route in aeroplane mode before you go.

Frequently asked questions

How much storage do offline maps need?

Open data maps run from tens of megabytes for a small country to a few hundred for a large one. Commercial navigation maps are larger, often a gigabyte or more per region.

Does GPS work with no signal?

Yes. Satellite positioning is entirely separate from the mobile network. What needs a connection is the map, which is exactly what downloading it solves.

Will offline navigation drain the battery?

Much less than online navigation, because the radio is not fetching tiles. The screen remains the largest drain, so dim it and mount the phone rather than holding it.

Wrong street, wrong city, or a blue dot that jumps

A dot in the wrong city is not a broken receiver. It is a WiFi network that moved house.

The printer is on the network and the phone cannot see it

There is no print button. There is a print service, and an entry in the share menu.

Six hours to fill and no socket

Aeroplane mode and a turn-based game will outlast any setting inside the game itself.

Looking a word up without opening a browser

A search engine gives you a definition. A dictionary tells you how the word behaves.

A contraction timer is a stopwatch with good manners. It is not monitoring anything.

The app is the easy part

Every one of these apps is a location service with a chat attached. It is worth knowing what it is broadcasting.
