Music offline on Android without a subscription

Streaming services put offline playback behind a subscription because it is the feature people pay for. That leaves three routes: a free tier that permits downloads for some content, a service with a genuinely usable free offline mode, or playing files that live on the phone. The third is the only one nobody can take away, and it is less inconvenient than it sounds.

Spotify

Spotify AB

SoundCloud

SoundCloud

JioSaavn. A very deep catalogue of Indian music, with downloads on the paid tier.

Playing your own files

This is the route that survives cancelled subscriptions, dead zones and long flights. A decent local player costs nothing and handles a folder of files better than any streaming app handles its own downloads.

1

Poweramp

Poweramp. The best sound processing on Android, with a real equaliser and gapless playback. The trial is generous and the licence is a one-off purchase rather than a subscription.

Open source, clean design, reads folders and tags properly, no account and no ads.

Also a very capable audio player, especially for unusual formats and large folders.

Getting files onto the phone without pain

  1. Fix the tags on a computer first Artist, album and track number. A player can only be as organised as the tags allow, and fixing them on a phone is miserable.
  2. Copy over WiFi, not Bluetooth A file manager with network support, or a USB cable. Bluetooth for an album takes as long as it sounds.
  3. Keep one folder, not several Players index folders. Music scattered through downloads produces a library full of duplicates.
  4. Use a nomedia file for audiobooks It keeps them out of the music library while remaining playable in a dedicated app.
Local files win
  • Flights and long trips with no signal
  • Music that is not on any service
  • Sound quality you control
  • No monthly cost
Streaming wins
  • Discovering new music
  • Not maintaining a collection
  • Listening across many devices
  • Sharing playlists with people

Free tiers give you podcasts, not music. If you need music with no signal for more than a month, own the files.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download Spotify music without Premium?

No. Podcasts download on the free tier, music does not. Anything claiming otherwise is a modified client, which is a bad idea for an account you care about.

Do offline downloads expire?

Yes, on every subscription service. The app must see the internet periodically, typically every thirty days, or downloads stop playing.

Which player has the best sound?

Poweramp, by a clear margin, thanks to its processing chain and equaliser. The difference is audible on decent headphones.
