EPUB readers that cope with a real library

Most e-reader apps look identical on a single book. The differences appear when the library is large, the formats are mixed, and you read across a phone, a tablet and sometimes a computer. Four things separate them: format support, library organisation, typography control and how position syncing works.

Keeping a large library in order

Once a collection passes a few hundred books, the reader stops being the interesting part and cataloguing does.

  1. Keep the books in one folder Not scattered through downloads. Every reader can point at a folder and index it.
  2. Fix metadata on a computer Author, series and cover are far faster to correct with a desktop library manager than on a phone.
  3. Sync the folder, not the app Any file sync keeps the same library on every device without depending on a reader's cloud.
  4. Back it up A book collection is small enough that there is no excuse. A few gigabytes covers most people's entire library.

Settings that make a phone comfortable to read on

Helps
  • A serif face at a slightly larger size than feels natural
  • Warm background rather than pure white or pure black
  • Margins wide enough to hold the phone without touching text
  • Locking the screen to portrait
Overrated
  • Blue light filters, whose effect is mostly the dimming
  • Justified text, which produces rivers on a narrow screen
  • Very small text to fit more per page
  • Animated page turns

The margin point is the one people miss. Most readers default to margins narrow enough that your thumb rests on the text, and widening them removes a constant small irritation.

Moon+ Reader if you want control, ReadEra if you want a tidy library, and keep the books in a folder you sync yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can I read Kindle books in another app?

Books with digital rights management are tied to the Kindle app. Files without it can be converted and read anywhere.

How do I sync reading position across devices?

Within one ecosystem it is built in. Across apps, sync the folder and accept that position may not follow.

Which reader is best for PDFs?

A dedicated PDF app rather than an e-reader. Reflowable formats and fixed layouts are genuinely different problems.

Wrong street, wrong city, or a blue dot that jumps

A dot in the wrong city is not a broken receiver. It is a WiFi network that moved house.

There is no print button. There is a print service, and an entry in the share menu.
