Screen density in APK downloads: what nodpi and xxhdpi mean

Android draws interfaces in density-independent units so the same layout looks the same physical size on different screens. Images cannot work that way, so apps ship several copies of every icon at different resolutions. Splitting those out into separate downloads is how a large app becomes a smaller one.

The density buckets

BucketRoughlyTypical device
hdpi240 dots per inchOld budget phones
xhdpi320Older mid-range, many tablets
xxhdpi480Most modern phones
xxxhdpi640Large flagship displays
nodpiEvery size includedWorks on anything, larger file

What happens if you pick wrongly

Nothing breaks. Android scales whatever assets it finds. Choosing a bucket below your screen gives soft, slightly blurry icons. Choosing above wastes space and can make the app use marginally more memory for images.

Worth matching exactly
  • A very large app where the saving is hundreds of megabytes
  • A phone with almost no free storage
  • Downloading over an expensive metered connection
Just take nodpi
  • Anything under a few hundred megabytes
  • You are not sure of the screen density
  • The file will be installed on more than one device

Finding your screen density

  1. Look at the download page on the phone itself The matching variant is marked, because the browser reports the density.
  2. Or use a hardware info app They report density in dots per inch and the bucket it falls into.
  3. Or work from the resolution A 1080 by 2400 phone at around six inches is xxhdpi. A 1440p flagship is usually xxxhdpi.

How bundles remove the question

An APKS or XAPK bundle contains the density splits together with the architecture splits, and an installer picks both. That is the whole reason bundles exist, and it is why the density question only arises when you download a single standalone APK.

Take nodpi unless storage is genuinely tight, and use a bundle installer so the question does not come up again.

Frequently asked questions

Will a low-density APK look bad?

Icons and images will be slightly soft on a high-resolution screen. Text is unaffected because it is not an image.

Does density affect performance?

Barely. Larger assets use a little more memory. It is not something you will notice.

Why do some apps have no density variants?

Because they use vector drawables, which scale to any density from one file. Well-built modern apps often do not need the split at all.
