CapCut against PicsArt

These two get compared because both edit media on a phone and both are used by the same people for social content. Underneath they are different kinds of software: one is a video editor built around a timeline, the other is an image editor built around layers.

The two, and what else is worth knowing

1

CapCut

Bytedance Pte. Ltd.
3,6 1 bi+ 306 MB

CapCut. The most capable free video editor on Android by a distance: multi-track timeline, keyframes, auto captions and audio ducking, with no time limit on exports.

2

Picsart

PicsArt, Inc.
4,0 1 bi+ 158 MB

PicsArt. A layered image editor with genuinely good cutout tools and the largest template library of any mobile design app.

3

InShot

InShot Video Editor
4,8 500 mi+ 111 MB

The alternative video editor: simpler than CapCut, exports GIF, and its free tier is clearer about what it limits.

4

Canva

Canva
4,8 500 mi+ 91 MB

If the job is a design with text rather than a photo edit, this is closer to what you want than PicsArt.

5

Snapseed

Google LLC
4,8 100 mi+ 133 MB

For actual photo correction rather than composition. Free, no account, and better at exposure and colour than either of the main two.

6

VN Video Editor

Ubiquiti Labs, LLC
4,7 100 mi+ 377 MB

VN. A proper multi-track timeline for free, without CapCut's account requirements.

YouCut. A light editor for cutting and joining clips quickly.

8

Adobe Express: AI Photo, Video

Adobe Express. Templates and layered design, the closest alternative to PicsArt's design side.

9

PhotoRoom

Photoroom AI Photo Editor
4,7 100 mi+ 242 MB

Photoroom. Background removal and product photos, faster than either for that one job.

10

PowerDirector

Cyberlink Corp
4,2 100 mi+ 341 MB

PowerDirector. More desktop-like editing, with keyframes and chroma key.

Choosing by the job

Use CapCut
  • Cutting a video to music
  • Adding captions to speech
  • Trimming and sequencing clips
  • Anything with an audio track
  • Vertical video for a social feed
Use PicsArt
  • Removing a background from a photo
  • Combining several images
  • Text as a design element
  • Stickers and overlays
  • A single still image as the output

People frequently use both in sequence: PicsArt to build a thumbnail or an overlay, CapCut to assemble the video and add captions. That is a sensible workflow rather than an indecisive one.

Two things that trip people up

  1. Export at the resolution you shot Both default to a setting that can be lower than your footage. Check before the final export.
  2. Watch the storage during a project A video project holds the source clips, the cache and the export at once. Several gigabytes is normal.
  3. Check auto captions before publishing They are good and they are not perfect, particularly with names and accents.
  4. Keep the original files Both edit destructively in some operations, and a re-edit needs the source.

Timeline and audio: CapCut. Layers and cutouts: PicsArt. Photo correction: neither, use Snapseed.

Frequently asked questions

Can CapCut edit photos?

Barely. It can place and animate them in a video, which is a different thing from editing them.

Is PicsArt good for video?

For short trims and adding effects, adequately. For anything with a timeline and audio, no.

Are both free?

Both have substantial free tiers with paid features and some watermarking. Test an export early.
