When the stock camera is the limiting factor

On a modern phone the photograph is made by software as much as by the lens. The stock camera runs a processing pipeline tuned for that specific sensor, and a third party app generally cannot use it. So a replacement app gives you manual control and raw files, and takes away the multi frame processing that makes a phone photograph look better than it has any right to.

What you gain and what you lose

A third party camera gives you
  • Manual shutter, ISO and focus
  • Raw files with real latitude
  • Histogram and focus peaking
  • Consistent behaviour across phones
  • No forced beautification
The stock camera keeps
  • Multi frame noise reduction
  • Computational night modes
  • The tuned colour science for that sensor
  • Full access to every lens on the phone
  • Video stabilisation that actually works

Camera and editing apps

1

Open Camera

Mark Harman
4,0 100 mi+ 5 MB

Open source, free, and more manual control than most paid apps. The interface is dense and everything is in it somewhere.

2

Footej Camera

Semaphore Inc.
4,3 1 mi+ 14 MB

The friendliest of the manual cameras, with a dial interface that makes exposure comprehensible rather than intimidating.

3

Camera FV-5

FGAE Apps
2,8 500 mil+ 13 MB

Camera FV-5. Built around the controls a photographer expects, including proper bracketing.

4

Câmera Pixel

Google LLC
2,9 1+ 1.38 GB

On a Pixel this is the stock camera and the reason to buy the phone. On other hardware it is a gamble that may not start at all.

5

Moto Câmera 3

Motorola Mobility LLC.
3,8 100 mi+ 182 MB

Worth knowing about for Motorola hardware, where it exposes more than the generic alternatives can reach.

6

Câmera simples: Fotos e Videos

Simple Mobile Tool
4,0 5 mi+ 27 MB

Not for control, for speed. Opens instantly and takes the shot, which is the only feature that matters for a receipt or a parking bay.

7

Snapseed

Google LLC
4,8 100 mi+ 133 MB

Still the best free editor on the phone. Its selective adjustment tool alone justifies the install.

8

Lightroom

Adobe
4,5 100 mi+ 469 MB

Lightroom. The raw editor, with the profiles that make raw files worth shooting. The free tier covers more than people expect.

9

Photoshop Express

Adobe
4,5 100 mi+ 214 MB

The quick fix companion for removing an object or straightening a horizon without opening the full editor.

10

Picsart

PicsArt, Inc.
4,0 1 bi+ 158 MB

Wider creative toolkit, heavier on the upsell, and the fastest route to a composite or a cutout.

11

B612

SNOW Corporation
4,0 500 mi+ 305 MB

Portrait and selfie focused, with filters people actually want. Honest about what it is.

12

BeautyPlus

PIXOCIAL TECHNOLOGY (SINGAPORE) PTE. LTD.
4,5 500 mi+ 392 MB

The other side of the same market. Included because it is enormously popular, with the obvious caveat about how much it changes a face.

13

InShot

InShot Video Editor
4,8 500 mi+ 111 MB

Video editing that handles phone footage well, with a free tier that does not watermark everything.

14

VN Video Editor

Ubiquiti Labs, LLC
4,7 100 mi+ 377 MB

A capable video editor for anyone shooting more than clips, with good text and transition tools.

15

Google Fotos

Google LLC
4,4 10 bi+ 221 MB

The library rather than the camera, and its basic editor is better than most people realise.

The settings that change the pictures

  1. Turn the grid on Composition improves more from a grid than from any app on this list.
  2. Lock exposure before recomposing A tap to focus also sets exposure. Locking it stops the picture changing brightness as you move.
  3. Drop to the main lens in low light Ultra wide and telephoto sensors are smaller and noisier. The main lens with a crop usually beats them after dark.
  4. Clean the lens Genuinely. A smeared lens costs more sharpness than any setting will recover.
  5. Shoot raw when the light is difficult Backlight, mixed indoor lighting and sunsets are where raw earns its storage.

Keep the stock camera for everyday shots. Install a manual one for the situations it handles badly, and shoot raw when it matters.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my photos look worse in a third party camera?

Because the stock app uses processing the other app cannot access. That is expected, and it is the trade you make for manual control.

Can I get every lens in a third party app?

Sometimes. Manufacturers expose the extra lenses inconsistently, so an app may only see the main camera. Check before buying a paid one.

Is a ported camera app safe to install?

Ports of a manufacturer camera to other hardware are built by enthusiasts and are not signed by the original developer. Treat them like any unofficial build and verify where it came from.

A dot in the wrong city is not a broken receiver. It is a WiFi network that moved house.
