Android browsers that block ads without an extension

Ad blocking on Android is not one feature. A browser can block network requests, hide elements after they load, block trackers but not ads, or leave it all to an extension. Those choices produce very different results on page load times and on how often a site breaks.

Three different things called ad blocking

ApproachWhat it doesTrade-off
Network-levelNever requests the ad at allFastest and lightest, breaks sites that gate content
CosmeticLoads the ad and hides the boxPage still pays the download cost
Tracker blockingBlocks analytics, not the ads themselvesAds still appear, profiling drops

Network-level blocking is what actually makes browsing feel faster, because the bytes are never fetched. Anything that only hides elements saves your eyes, not your data plan.

The browsers

1

Brave Browser

Brave Software
4,8 100 mi+ 279 MB

Blocking is built into the engine, so ad and tracker requests never leave the phone. On ad-heavy news sites the difference in load time is obvious, and data use drops noticeably on a metered plan. The built-in reward system is opt-in and can be ignored entirely.

2

Firefox

Mozilla
4,6 500 mi+ 596 MB

The only mainstream Android browser that runs real extensions, which means uBlock Origin on mobile. That combination blocks more than any built-in list, at the cost of setting it up yourself and slightly higher memory use.

3

Chrome

Google LLC
4,1 10 bi+ 176 MB

No ad blocking, and none is coming. Included because it is the compatibility baseline: when a page breaks in a blocking browser, this is what you check it against.

4

DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo
4,7 50 mi+ 121 MB

Blocks trackers by default and clears everything with one button. Lighter blocking than a filter list, but zero setup.

5

Opera

Opera
4,7 500 mi+ 171 MB

A built in advertisement blocker you switch on in settings, plus a data saving mode that stacks with it.

6

Adblock Browser

eyeo GmbH
4,2 10 mi+ 249 MB

The filter list people know from the desktop, packaged as its own browser.

7

Kiwi Browser

Geometry OU
4,0 10 mi+ 233 MB

A Chromium browser that installs desktop extensions, so you can add exactly the blocker you prefer.

8

Vivaldi Browser

Vivaldi Technologies
4,7 5 mi+ 335 MB

Built in tracker and advertisement blocking with more interface options than any other browser here.

9

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Corporation
4,7 100 mi+ 218 MB

Edge includes tracking prevention with a strict mode, and syncs with the desktop version if you use it.

10

Samsung Internet

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
3,6 1 bi+ 300 MB

Samsung Internet accepts content blocker add-ons from its own store, and runs on any Android phone, not only Galaxy.

11

Yandex

Direct Cursus Computer Systems Trading LLC
4,3 100 mi+ 283 MB

Blocks intrusive advertising by default. Consider what it syncs to its account before signing in.

12

Tor

The Tor Project
4,5 50 mi+ 104 MB

Not an advertisement blocker as such, but its strict defaults strip out most tracking along with it. Slower by design.

What breaks, and what to do about it

Usually fine
  • News sites, blogs, forums and documentation
  • Search, maps and most web apps
  • Video that is not behind an ad gate
Expect friction
  • Sites that detect blockers and refuse to load
  • Login flows that route through an ad or analytics domain
  • Free streaming that funds itself with pre-roll
  1. Turn shields off for that one site Every blocking browser has a per-site toggle; use it instead of switching browsers.
  2. Keep a second browser for the awkward ones Banking and government sites are the usual candidates.
  3. Do not stack blockers A blocking browser plus a VPN-based blocker plus a DNS blocker mostly produces confusing failures.

If you want it to just work, use a browser that blocks at the network level. If you want maximum control, use Firefox with an extension and accept a few minutes of setup.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking ads save battery?

Measurably, on ad-heavy pages. The saving comes from not running the ad scripts, not from the smaller download.

Can I use uBlock Origin on Android?

On Firefox for Android, yes, from the browser's own add-on list. Chrome and its relatives do not support extensions on Android.

Is it wrong to block ads on sites I like?

That is your call. Most blocking browsers let you disable shields per site, which is a reasonable way to support the handful of sites you read daily.
